Abstract: Rehder and Wilson (1913) described Liquidambar formosana Hance var. monticola based on material collected by Wilson in western Hubei and Sichuan Provinces. An examination of the type, Wilson 795 (A), reveals that there are three sheets with this number, all with “Type” in Wilson’handwriting on the label. These syntypes do not agree completely with the original description. They also fall within the range of variation of L. formosana var. formosana based on a comparison of specimens from throughout the range of the species. Consequently, we consider L. formosana Hance var.monticola Rehder & Wilson to be a synonym of L. formosana Hance var. formosana.
