Call for papers: Special Issue on "Cyperaceae in a data-rich era: New evolutionary insights from solid frameworks"

    Cyperaceae is among the ten most diverse Angiosperm families and the third largest among monocots, with a critical ecological role in wetlands and high latitude-high altitude communities. In the last two decades, molecular phylogenetics has revolutionized our understanding of the sedge family. Now, with the achievement of large taxonomic coverages and the advent of high-throughput sequencing, the newly enabled phylogenetic frameworks are much more solid than earlier ones. On the one hand, new phylogenomic approaches have generated a wealth of sequence data, allowing re-investigating fast evolving Cyperaceae lineages in which relationships could not be resolved using Sanger sequencing data. On the other hand, the increasing availability of bioclimatic data, digitized herbarium material, material interchange opportunities, and new bioinformatic tools allow the gathering, analysis and processing of information in a way that was not possible just a decade ago. All this has opened new research horizons for the cyperologist community on the systematics, taxonomy, biogeography, ecology, morphology, and evolution of key characters in sedges such as chromosomes and C4 photosynthesis.

    This special issue aims to select and bring together some of the most important recent progress and key international collaborations on the understanding of the evolution of Cyperaceae.

    Subject Coverage

    We welcome submissions in all aspects related with evolution, biogeography, and systematics of Cyperaceae. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

    — Phylogenomics and phylogenetics of large or complex groups

    — Newly explored biogeographic and evolutionary aspects using sedges as a model group

    — Systematic revision of large sedge groups

    Important Dates

    Authors interested in contributing to the special issue should email a proposal that includes a tentative title, tentative author list, and a 200–300-word abstract to Pedro Jiménez Mejías and Isabel Larridon at pjimmej@gmail.com and i.larridon@kew.org. The deadline for abstract submission is 30 June 2020. Proposals will be reviewed by the Guest Editors. Authors will be notified by 15 July 2020, as to whether their proposal was accepted.


    Authors whose proposals are accepted should prepare submissions in accordance with JSE Author Guidelines and submit their manuscripts by 31 August 2020 at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/josae. Note that acceptance of a proposal does not guarantee the eventual acceptance of the manuscript, as all manuscripts will be rigorously peer-reviewed and held to the standards of the journals.


    The target date for publication of the special issue is early 2021, although accepted manuscripts will be published online in advance of the issue.
