During diploidization, sequence elimination in reciprocal allopolyploids often appears variable in different species, suggesting that the nuclear-cytoplasmic interactions play different roles in different polyploid plants. In this study, an amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis was carried out by using thirteen pairs of EcoRI-NN/MseI- NNN selective primers in amplification of the DNAs from reciprocal F1 hybrids of Cucumis hystrix and C. sativus, the synthetic allotetraploids and the diploid parents. The results indicated that extensive DNA sequence elimination was induced by the genomic merge in the allopolyploids. The frequency of elimination of some parental sequences was affected by cytoplasmic factors, the differences from reciprocal crosses were not statistically significant, and the time of elimination (both started in the F1) and the type of elimination were also the same, suggesting that the nuclear-cytoplasmic interactions might not be the main factor causing sequence elimination. In addition, the direction of sequence elimination was not affected by the reciprocal crosses, and the elimination was more common from the C. sativus which has fewer chromosomes.

Electrophoresis of aspartate aminotransferase (AAT), malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and esterase (EST) were performed to characterize and compare the reciprocal interspecific hybrid plants between cultivated cucumber (Cucumis sativus cv. Changchunmici, 2n=14, CC) and its wild relative C. hystrix (2n=24, HH), and their parents. The results indicate that the zymograms in the reciprocal F1 were typically expressed by complementary bands from both parents. In addition, four heterodimeric bands (Aat-1-94, Aat-2-104, Mdh-3-102 and Est-5-102) were observed. All the three isozymes investigated could identify the interspecific hybrid plants. The results also reveal the differences of the reciprocal F1s at the number and intensity of the bands in the zymograms of AAT and MDH, which further confirmed the reciprocal differences in the interspecific hybridization between C. hystrix and C. sativus.

Metapolypodium Ching, a monotypic genus endemic to Asia mainland (SW China and its neighboring regions), is still in dispute as to its systematic position. In this paper, the phylogenetic relationships of this genus was examined based on the chloroplast DNA sequences of rbcL gene and rps4-trnS region. The rbcL genes and rps4-trnS region of M. manmeiense (Christ) Ching and its closely related species were sequenced. The combined relative sequences downloaded from the GenBank, consisting of three data sets―rbcL genes, rps4-trnS region including rps4 and rps4-trnS intergenetic spacer, and the combined matrix―were used to assess relationships among them with the neighbor-joining (NJ), maximum-parsimony (MP) and Bayesian inference (BI) analyses. The phylogenetic trees based on individual sequence data and the combined data are topologically similar and reveal that M. manmeiense forms a clade with the members of Polypodiodes and Polypodiastrum, which is not related to any member of Polypodium. The trees also strongly support the close relationship between M. manmeiense and Polypodiodes microrhizoma (C. B. Clarke ex Baker) Ching. We should agree with Ching's opinion, recognizing Polypodium L. emend. Ching, Metapolypodium Ching, Polypodiodes Ching, Polypodiastrum Ching and Schellolepis J. Dryopteridoid ferns are distributed all over the world, but China and its adjacent regions have the highest species diversity, so China is a key region to study their phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary history. In this study, chloroplast rbcL sequences from 105 species of Dryopteridaceae and their relative lineages were used to reconstruct the phylogenetic trees using the MEGA2 and MrBayes 3.0b4 software. The phylogenetic relationships were inferred using the neighbor-joining, maximum-parsimony and Bayesian analysis, and three methods produced trees with largely congruent topology. These trees reveal that: (1) the species of the Dryopteridaceae in the classification of Ching except for those in Cyclopeltis are divided into two monophyletic groups corresponding to the two tribes, Dryopterideae Ching and Polysticheae Ching, but the genus Lithostegia should be transferred from Polysticheae to Dryopterideae, and the scopes of the two tribes should be extended: the tribe Dryopterideae includes the family Peranemaceae and some species of Ctenitis (a genus of the family Tectariaceae in Ching's classification), and the tribe Polysticheae includes the American Phanerophlebia and Polystichopsis; (2) Cyclopeltis is isolated from all the other species of Dryopteridaceae and their relative lineages; (3) the family Peranemaceae in Ching's classification may not be a natural group, and should be included in tribe Dryopterideae, and is closely related to Nothoperanema; (4) Cyrtomium and Polystichum are both resolved as paraphyletic, and Dryopteris polyphyletic; (5) Phanerophlebiopsis, Leptorumohra and Lithostegia are closely related to Arachniodes; Cyrtogonellum and some species of Polystichum and of Cyrtomium form a clade; Nothoperanema are closely related to Peranemaceae and some species of Dryopteris. The relationships among genera of Dryopteridaceae, the relationship between Peranemaceae and Dryopteridaceae, and that between Ctenitis and Dryopteridaceae, and the systemic positions of the genera endemic to China or Asia (Cyclopeltis, Nothoperanema, Phanerophlebiopsis, Leptorumohra, Lithostegia and Cyrtogonellum) are also discussed. Floral nectaries attract insect pollinators through secreted nectar. The structure and the size of floral nectaries are determining factors of the quantity and concentration of the nectar produced, which may consequently influence the patterns of insect visitation. In this study, we examined the structural and developmental characteristics of the floral nectaries of Litchi chinensis of "Nuomici" and "Feizixiao". In two variety of L. chinensis, the floral nectaries of both functional male and female flowers are located between the cup-shaped calyx and the ovary. These floral nectaries are typical structural nectaries, formed as protrusions on the surface of flower receptacles, and at the mature stage, they are composed of epidermis, nectariferous tissue, and vascular tissue containing only phloem elements. The epidermis of the floral nectaries is covered with numerous epidermal hairs, with sporadic stomata distributed on the top surface of the nectaries. Before the nectaries start to secret nectar, the nectariferous tissues are filled with numerous starch grains, which display regular changes before, during, and after nectar secretion. The nectariferous tissue contains two cell types of different morphological characteristics. These cell types presumably have different functions, either for nectar synthesis, or for protecting nectaries from damage by phenolic compounds. The primordia of these nectaries initiate during floral organ differentiation, and its development coincides with the formation of microspores and macrospores in the male and female flowers, respectively. Based on these structural and developmental characteristics, we discussed the ontogeny and phylogeny of the floral nectaries in L. chinensis and possible evolutional adaptation of nectaries for effective attraction of insect pollinators.

Abstract Segregation of Excentrodendron and Burretiodendron has hardly been accepted despite their distinct pollen morphology. Megasporogenesis and embryo sac development were studied in Excentrodendron hsienmu in order to examine the basis of segregation of Excentrodendron and Burretiodendron and to study the affinity of Excentrodendron. Excentrodendron hsienmu is dioecious and a large number of flower buds developed every year on mature male and female trees but flower blossoming and fruiting did not occur every year and there was a cycle of 3-4 years. Staminate and pistillate flowers were not distinguishable in the early development stages since both microsporogenesis and megasporogenesis were observed in staminate and pistillate flowers, respectively. Megasporogenesis in staminate flowers degenerated after demarcation of megaspore mother cell or rarely after megaspore tetrads. The monosexual flowers of Excentrodendron were probably derived from bisexual flowers. The ovule was anatropous, bitegmic, and crassinucellate. The primary archesporium of ovules consisted of usually one cell and integument initials were not demarcated at the time of the differentiation of the archesporium. The outer and inner integument of the mature embryo sac was 3-4 and 3 cells thick, respectively. The megaspore mother cell was usually deeply seated in the nucellus before meiosis and gave rise to a linear or rarely T-shaped tetrad. The development of embryo sac conforms to the Polygonum Type. Degeneration was observed commonly after demarcation of megaspore mother cells; 88% of embryo sacs degenerated and only 9% of ovules developed to seeds. Excentrodendron shares with Burretiodendron a number of plesiomorphic characters that are commonly found in members of Malvales. It differs from Burretiodendron mainly in the thickness of the inner integument which is 3 cells thick in Excentrodendron but 4-5 in Burretiodendron. In addition, archesporium is usually unicelled in Excentrodendron but multicelled in Burretiodendron. Segregation of Excentrodendron is therefore supported by the present study. Embryologically, Excentrodendron differs also from Pterospermum, Dombeyeae, and other taxa of the expanded Malvaceae, mainly in the thickness of integuments and number of archesporial cells. The present study does not support the placement of Excentrodendron in the tribe Dombeyeae of Malvaceae s.l.

Morphological development of the spikelet and the floret in Dendrocalamus ronganensis has been studied for the first time under scanning electron microscope (SEM). The developmental sequence of spikelet is: spikelet primordium→primordium of the first glume→primordium of the second glume→primordium of the first lemma→primordium of the first floret→primordium of the second lemma→primordium of the second floret. The spikelet is a pseudospikelet consisting of two glumes and 1-2 florets. The developmental sequence of floret is: primordium of palea→primordia of stamens→primordium of pistil. The palea originates from two distinct protuberances in its early development, and the two parts gradually unite in late stage of development. The palea has been confirmed to be of a double origin. The primordia of stamens initiate nearly in two whorls. The central part of the floret primordium changes directly into gynoecium. The development of lodicules cannot be observed in the whole process. The floret, consisting of stamens and pistil subtended by lemma and palea, is quite reduced because of the absence of the perianth. The evolution of the spikelet and the floret in the Bambusoideae is discussed based on the comparison of the morphological development of the spikelet and the floret in Dendrocalamus with that in its closely related genera.

Smooth cordgrass Spartina alterniflora Loisel., a perennial rhizomatous grass native to the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of North America, spreads rapidly in estuaries and coastal salt marshes in the Pacific coast of North America, Europe, New Zealand and China, and has caused considerable effects on the invaded regions. We here describe a comprehensive account of its biology and ecology, and discuss the management of this invasive plant. S. alterniflora was intentionally introduced to China in 1979 for the purposes of erosion check, soil melioration and dike protection. However, its rapid elongation rates, high leaf area indices, high photosynthetic rates, long photosynthetic season and clonal growth make S. alterniflora an aggressive competitor with native salt marsh plants in the coastal regions in China. The estimates made for the year 2002 show that S. alterniflora covered 112000 hectares throughout the eastern China, from Guangxi (21? N) to Tianjin (39? N), and is still spreading rapidly in the east coast of China. The successful invasion of S. alterniflora in non-native ranges is obviously the result of the interactions between its great invading ability and a high invasibility of the invaded ecosystems, which is further facilitated by human activities. On the basis of its population trend and potential impact on native ecosystems, S. alterniflora was officially placed on the list of most harmful invasive alien plants (nine species) in China in 2003. S. alterniflora invasions in the salt marshes have multiple effects on the abiotic and biotic properties and the functioning of the invaded ecosystems, including conversion of mudflats to Spartina meadows, loss of shorebirds' foraging habitats, alteration of ecosystem processes (e.g. carbon and nitrogen cycling), decrease in abundance of native species, degradation of native ecosystems and their functions, and considerable economic loss. It is predicted that the environmental changes driven by human activities in the coastal regions (e.g. eutrophication, sea level rise and saltwater intrusion) may favour its further invasions in coastal ecosystems in the future. Like other invasive species, it is quite difficult, expensive and even impossible to eradicate S. alterniflora once it has successfully invaded the coastal ecosystems. Obviously, further intentional introductions of S. alterniflora should be banned in China, and effective control measures should be urgently taken, to minimize the negative impacts of S. alterniflora on native ecosystems in China. A new species of the genus Lysimachia, L. dextrorsiflora X. P. Zhang, X. H. Guo & J. W. Shao, is described and illustrated. This species, occurring in Anhui and Fujian provinces of China, is similar to L. christinae Hance in the prostrate stem, opposite leaves, yellow flowers born singly in leaf axils, but differs by having corolla lobes contorted towards the right and imbricate in the bud from a top view, the pedicel usually longer than the subtending leaves, and the flowering time from early April to early May. In L. christinae, the corolla lobes are contorted towards the left from a top view, the pedicels are usually shorter than the subtending leaves, and the flowering time from early May to early June.

Clematis hagiangensis N. T. Do, a new species of the Ranunculaceae, is described from Vietnam. In floral structure this new species is related to the American species of sect. Aspidanthera subsect. Dioicae, but differs in its simple leaves and ovate or broadly ovate sepals. This section is newly recorded in the Eurasian continent.

One newly recorded genus to China, Rhammatophyllum O. E. Schulz, six newly recorded species to China, Woodsia acuminata (Fomin) Sipl., Stellaria alsinoides Boiss. & Buhse, Rh. erysimoides (Kar. & Kir.) Al-Shehbaz & O. Appel, Lappula krylovii Ovczinnikova, A. I. Pjak & A. L. Ebel, Linaria hepatica Bunge and Valerianella szovitsiana Fisch. & Mey., all found in Mts. Altai, northwestern Xinjiang are reported in this paper.

Four species and one variety in the genus Rhododendron subgen. Azaleastrum, namely R. kailiense Fang & M. Y. He and R. linearicupulare Tam, R. latoucheae Franch., R. esquirolii Lévl., and R.championae Hook. var. ovatifolium Tam are reduced to synonyms.

The taxonomic status of two species and one form of the genus Mussaenda (Rubiaceae) from China is clarified: M. inflata Hsue & H. Wu, M. anomala Li and M. pubescens Ait. f. forma clematidiflora Chun ex Hsue & H. Wu are reduced to synonyms of M. hirsutula Miq., M. esquirolii Lévl. and M. pubescens Ait. f. respectively.

Paris xichouensis (H. Li) Y. H. Ji, H. Li & Z. K. Zhou is proposed as a new combination based on P. cronquistii (Takht.) H. Li var. xichouensis H. Li. This species is similar to P. cronquistii (Takht.) H. Li and P. vietnamensis (Takht.) H. Li, but differs by the leaf blade papery, the petals green, much shorter than sepals, and the capsule green-yellow at maturity.

Adenophora suolunensis P. F. Tu & X. F. Zhao is reduced to the synonymy of A. micrantha D. Y. Hong. A. urceolata Y. Z. Zhao is a later homonym of A. urceolata C. Y. Wu, and thus a new name, A. kulunensis Y. Z. Zhao is proposed for this species.
