Abstract: When Iljin published Tugarinovia Iljin in 1928, he placed it in Tribe Inuleae Subtribe Gnaphalinae. In recent years I have chance to collect Tugarinovia ongolia Iljin from the North-east Inner Mongolia. Having studied the structure of the upper portion of its style (Figure 2), the morphology of the pollen grains (Plate 3), the spiny margina of leaves and the involucels, the densely sericeous strigose achene (Figure 1) etc., I am of the opinion that the systematic position of Tugarinovia Iljin ought to be transferred to Tribe Cynareae Subtribe Carlinina, This genus has clearly close relationships with Carlina L. and Atractylodes DC. Iljin described the corolla color in Latin description as “Corolla pallide purpurea in sicco albida supra flaveseenti-brunnescens”, but in fact the color of fresh flowes observed by the present author is“Corolla alba, anthenae roseae vel pallide purpureae”. Again he described the achene as “Achaenia glabra et juvenalia laevia”, but the mature achene collected by the present author is: “Achenia densissime sericeo-strigosa”. Therefore the original description of the flower color and the surface of achene of the genus Tngarinovia must be revised.
