The peppered moth Biston betularia L., widely distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, represents an ideal organism for exploring phylogeographic patterns and evolutionary history. In this study, we integrated molecular, morphological, and distributional data of this species to reconstruct its phylogenetic relationships, estimate divergence times, infer the geographic origin, and trace dispersal routes. Molecular analyses identified six monophyletic lineages (HM, NC, HD, E, NA I, and NA II). With the exception of the sympatric North American lineages NA I and NA II, the remaining lineages exhibit allopatric distributions across Eurasia. Ancestral area reconstruction and approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) analyses supported a southern Xizang origin within the Himalayan Mountains, consistent with the “Xizang-origin hypothesis.” The colonization of North America occurred twice via the Bering Land Bridge during the Pleistocene glaciation. Collectively, the current genetic pattern is best explained by gradual allopatric differentiation following long-distance dispersal and subsequent isolation. Furthermore, we reconstructed the global dispersal history of B. betularia. These results indicated that in situ speciation within the Himalaya may be more common than previously recognized, challenging the notion that Himalayan fauna are predominantly considered “immigrant.” This study enhances our understanding of Himalayan zoogeography and biodiversity through the resolved evolutionary history of a widely distributed species.

Pinaceae are one of the most economically and ecologically important tree families and play a key role in boreal, temperate, and montane forests of the Northern Hemisphere. The family have a rich fossil record with the earliest occurrence of the Pinaceae crown group probably from the Late Jurassic, and diverse seed cones, woods, leaves, and pollen grains from the Early Cretaceous of the Northern Hemisphere. However, the origin and early evolutionary history of Pinaceae is not well understood, in part because of uncertainty about the phylogenetic position of early fossils. In this article we describe a new woody stem of Pinaceae based on well-preserved material from the Early Cretaceous Huolinhe Formation in Jarud Banner, eastern Inner Mongolia, Northeast China. Piceoxylon jarudense sp. nov. has distinct growth rings with secondary xylem composed of tracheids, ray tracheids, ray parenchyma cells, axial parenchyma cells, and axial and radial resin canals. Pitting on radial walls of tracheids is abietinean; cross-field pitting is piceoid and taxodioid with two to six pits arranged in one to two rows per cross-field. Axial and radial resin canals are lined by thick-walled epithelial cells. Piceoxylon has been considered to include species with wood anatomy comparable to extant Larix, Pseudotsuga, Picea, and Cathaya. Comparisons of wood anatomy and constrained phylogenetic analyses of P. jarudense, one of the earliest records of Piceoxylon, both suggest that P. jarudense is most likely allied with Larix and Pseudotsuga within the pinoid clade suggesting divergence of the Larix–Pseudotsuga clade before ~125.6 Ma.

The 26 genera of aurantioids and the 28 species of one genus, Citrus, are mapped. The distributions are explained, not by using fossil-calibrated clade ages and ancestral-area algorithms, but by focusing on the geometry of the clade distributions and the tectonic history at the break zones (nodes). Allopatry is attributed to vicariance, while overlap is attributed to normal dispersal. Subfamily Aurantioideae is allopatric with its sister groups in Eurasia and the Americas. In contrast, the seven main clades within Aurantioideae show a high level of overlap. But within each of these seven main clades, there is again a high level of allopatry. The pattern is explained by vicariance events at the first and third levels. The overlap at the second level can be accounted for if vicariance (now obscured) generated the clades and subsequent dispersal caused secondary overlap of the clades. This latter phase of mobilism can be explained by the migration of coastlines and maritime flora far inland during marine transgressions, especially in the mid-Cretaceous. Many aurantioids inhabit mangrove-associated vegetation, beach thicket, limestone substrate, and areas with high levels of disturbance. Within Citrus, the five main clades overlap in South-Central China (Nanling Mountains) and are allopatric elsewhere. The overlap zone has been interpreted as a center of origin, but it is explained here as a break zone, the site of vicariance in a widespread ancestor, where localized, secondary overlap has developed later. The zone coincides with a belt of mid-Cretaceous deformation manifested in voluminous magmatism, subsidence, rifting, back-arc extension, and the opening of the East China Sea.

The tribe Cunonieae comprises five genera and 214 species of shrubs and trees currently distributed in the Southern Hemisphere and the tropics, exhibiting an amphi‐Pacific disjunct distribution shared with Araucariaceae, Myrtaceae, Nothofagaceae, Podocarpaceae, and Proteaceae, among others. To address the central question of how historical geological forces have shaped the distribution of plant diversity in the southern hemisphere, we aimed to provide evidence from the biogeographical history of Cunonieae. We generated themost densely sampled phylogenetic trees of Cunonieae available to date, with 121 samples and 81 species, basedon 404 new sequences of plastid and nuclear DNA regions with high hierarchical phylogenetic signal (matK, trnL‐F, rpl16, and internal transcribed spacer (ITS)). We included 184 samples of Rosids to estimate divergence times using fossil calibration points. For biogeographic inference, we employed a time‐stratified model including fossils as tips. Cunonia and Pterophylla were paraphyletic in the ITS tree, and Cunonia was paraphyletic in the plastid tree. Pancheria, Vesselowskya, and Weinmannia were monophyletic, the latter with conflicting nuclear and plastid phylogenies. The crown group Cunonieae was dated at ~56 Ma, and its ancestral areas were Antarctica and Patagonia. Antarctica acted as a bridge between Australia and South America before the consolidation of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and the extinction of the lineage in Antarctica from the Oligocene to the Miocene. Following that, Cunonieae spread to lower latitudes via Zealandia/Oceania and Patagonia/South America. Geological changes during the Pliocene facilitated a further burst in diversification along the Andes, in Madagascar, and in New Caledonia, where at least three colonization events occurred.

Investigating the evolutionary history and species diversification patterns in hyperdiverse lineages is essential for understanding how species diversity accumulates and how floras assemble historically across diverse regions. A large angiosperm family, Apocynaceae, exhibited remarkable diversity in functional traits including growth form, fruit types, and pollen aggregation, which may have a substantial impact on species diversification rates. However, the lack of a robust and well dated phylogeny has hindered our understanding of Apocynaceae diversification. To address this gap, we reconstructed a robust phylogeny covering 22 of 25 tribes using plastome sequences, then employed this framework to estimate divergence times, analyze diversification patterns, and investigate associations between species diversification and functional traits. The plastome phylogenies received strong nodal support across most branches. Among higher taxonomic groupings, three subfamilies (Asclepiadoideae, Secamonoideae, and Periplocoideae) were monophyletic. At the tribal levels, 19 tribes were strongly supported as monophyletic except Melodineae, Willughbeieae, and Vinceae. Additionally, five genera (Vincetoxicum, Cynanchum, Hoya, Marsdenia, and Aganosma) were identified as nonmonophyletic. Our analyses revealed that Apocynaceae originated in the paleotropics during the middle Late Cretaceous. Integrating binary state speciation and extinction (BiSSE), hidden state speciation and extinction (HiSSE), and fast, intuitive state-dependent speciation-extinction (FiSSE) analyses, we found that species with pollinia had a higher speciation rate than those without. Dry-fruited species had a higher speciation rate than those with fleshy fruits. Furthermore, Bayesian analysis of macro-evolutionary mixtures (BAMM) detected a diversification rate increase coinciding with the evolution of pollinia with clip-type attachment mechanisms in the subfamily Asclepiadoideae. Herbs had the highest speciation rate, followed by climbers and self-supporting species. Our findings contribute to understanding the historical assembly of floras in tropical and subtropical Asia.

Evanioidea, as a poorly known group of Hymenoptera, exhibited remarkable species diversity during the Cretaceous, especially within the basal fossil family † Praeaulacidae. Here, we describe a new genus and species, † Coronaulacus cancan gen. et sp. nov., from Cretaceous Kachin amber. Based on its unique morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis, we place the new genus into † Praeaulacidae. This new genus is significantly distinct from other genera of the family: it is characterized by a ring of tubercles around the median ocellus, forewing vein 3r-m absent, an unusually enlarged terminal tarsomere of the midleg, and extremely elongated hindlegs. The ring of tubercles indicate that the new taxon was a parasitoid on wood-living insects. We discuss the morphology and function of the midlegs and hindlegs. We suggest that the males of this genus might have exhibited behavior similar to dance flies (Diptera: Empididae) or hangingflies (Mecoptera: Bittacidae). During mating, the males possibly used their mid legs with the expanded distal tarsus to effectively grasp and restrain the females and their elongate hindlegs to suspend themselves and their mate from the vegetation, providing support and stability during copulation.

Although considerable progress has recently been made in the phylogeny of Hymenasplenium, the genus remains poorly investigated; specifically, the diversification and historical biogeography of the genus have been little studied. Here, we infer an updated plastid DNA phylogeny and the first large-scale nuclear DNA phylogeny to understand the biogeography of the genus. The plastid phylogeny includes 312 accessions from across the genus′ distribution range (ca. 121% increase of the latest sampling), with special attention paid to island accessions from 14 Indian Ocean and Pacific islands, whereas the nuclear phylogeny includes 161 accessions of the Afro–Eurasian species. We identify one new major clade and two new subclades. Reticulate evolution was revealed both among subclades and among species in the Afro–Eurasian. Our divergence-time analyses show that most of the extant species diversity has arisen from diversification after the Oligocene despite a Cretaceous origin of the genus. Ancestral area reconstruction revealed that vicariance likely played a major role in building biogeographic patterns at deep evolutionary scales (the Afro–Eurasian clade and the American clade) in Hymenasplenium, while the intercontinental disjunctions within the Afro–Eurasian clade among Asia, Africa, and Oceania might have resulted from frequent long-distance dispersal events from Asia to Oceania and Africa.

Pseudoscorpiones are a group of small-sized to medium-sized arachnids under the species-rich Chelicerata. They are found in many terrestrial habitats, normally cryptic, including leaf litter and soil, under tree bark or rocks. The fossil record of pseudoscorpions is mainly composed of species belonging to extinct genera in extant families, with a small number of taxa described from the famous Kachin amber, sometimes referred to as Burmese amber or Burmite (12 species in six families). Here, we describe a well preserved male specimen of pseudoscorpion from mid-Cretaceous Kachin amber, representing the first fossil record of Cheliferidae from Burmese amber. This new taxon, Echinochelifer curvatus gen. & sp. nov., is characterized by elongate tubercle-bearing pedipalps and several trichobothrial features. Based on these, we discuss the systematic placement and palaeoecological implications of the new taxon in Burmese amber.

Carex sect. Paniceae sensu lato (s.l.) exhibits two major disjunct centers of diversity: eastern North America and East Asia. This pattern, commonly observed in other plant groups, has been associated with trans-Pacific dispersal from Asia to America and subsequent local extinctions in western North America. This study reconstructed a phylogenetic tree using two nuclear (external transcribed spacer and internal transcribed spacer) and three plastid (matK, trnL-F, and rpl32-trnL^UAG) regions, along with 474 nuclear loci from high-throughput sequencing (Hyb-Seq). Dating analysis and ancestral area reconstruction were used to investigate the evolutionary and biogeographic history of sect. Paniceae s.l. A broader circumscription of sect. Paniceae s.l., incorporating sects. Bicolores and Laxiflorae, is established. Two primary clades were identified: one clade predominantly diversified in North America and the other in East Asia. Biogeographic analyses suggested a likely origin of sect. Paniceae s.l. in the Palearctic during the Late Miocene. The most probable scenario involved dispersal to eastern North America via the Western Palearctic, followed by subsequent dispersal into western North America, other parts of the continent, and back to the Old World. Within East Asia, the group was inferred to have diversified during the Pliocene and Pleistocene, with the basalmost nodes inferred in mainland China. Multiple dispersal events from this region to the Russian Far East, Korea, and Japan were inferred. This study highlights the underexplored role of East Asia in the biogeography of grass-like plants and the existence of alternative migration routes in explaining the East Asia–eastern North America pattern of disjunction.

Five new spider fossils of the family Macrothelidae (Araneae: Mygalomorphae) are described from mid‐ Cretaceous Kachin amber, Myanmar. A new genus Acanthomacrothele gen. nov. is established for three new species: Acanthomacrothele pauciverrucae sp. nov., Acanthomacrothele geminata sp. nov., and Acanthomacrothele longicaudata sp. nov. Both male and female specimens of A. pauciverrucae sp. nov. are described, representing a rare case of a fossil spider with both sexes known. We also describe an unidentified juvenile of Macrothelidae to document different developmental stages of Cretaceous species. To test the phylogenetic position of the new fossils, we undertook phylogenetic analyses using both topology‐unconstrained and topology‐constrained methods. Our analyses supported the placement of Acanthomacrothele gen. nov. in Macrothelidae, although its phylogenetic relationship to other genera of Macrothelidae differed among different analytical methods. The fossils documented here have elongated, widely spaced posterior lateral spinnerets, compact rectangular group of eyes on a tubercle, and more spines on male tibia of anterior legs than female, similar to extant macrothelids, suggesting that they probably have similar retreat construction behavior, habitat preference, and mating position to their living relatives.

The earliest ovules or seeds widely reported from the Late Devonian (Famennian) are crucial for understanding the evolution of seed plants. Cosmosperma, the first Devonian seed documented in China and East Asia, is characterized by cupules with multiple segments enclosing a single ovule and covered by prickles. Two new Cosmosperma species, Cosmosperma dicrana sp. nov. and Cosmosperma lepta sp. nov., are now identified from the Upper Devonian (Wutong Formation) of Zhejiang and Anhui provinces, China, respectively. C. dicrana exhibits dichotomized fertile branches terminating in pairs of cupulate ovules, with centrifugally extending cupule segments at their distal portions. C. lepta displays slender cupulate ovules on pinnate fertile branches. Both species possess prickles on their cupules. A comparison with coeval seed plant taxa reveals differences in fertile branch types and suggests different evolutionary levels. The potentially weak dispersal ability of Cosmosperma is suggested by the absence of specialized structures for wind or water transport. Prickles on Cosmosperma cupules do not suggest adaptations for epizoochory but facilitate entanglement and friction. The adaptations for short‐distance dispersal can be advantageous in a disturbed and heterogeneous environment. The presence of Late Devonian seed plant taxa with dispersal‐adapted traits hints at habitat divergence, with some possibly inhabiting uplands or areas away fromthe coast. The pricklesmay also be an adaptation for maintaining stability in small‐ to medium‐sized plants of the Late Devonian coastal communities.

Eucalypt fossils were widely reported from the Cenozoic deposits across the Southern Hemisphere (Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina). However, no attached reproductive and vegetative fossil remains of this myrtaceous clade have been discovered till now. We report and describe for the first time a fossil eucalypt twig with attached foliage, flower buds, and mature flowers from the early Eocene (~55–52 Ma) sediments (Palana Formation) of Rajasthan, western India. As both vegetative and reproductive organs are in organic connection, they clearly represent the same species. In addition, here we also introduce fossil materials of isolated leaves, flower buds, inflorescence, and flowers recovered from the same stratigraphic level. Our Eocene fossils and extant members of the eucalypt clade are related morphologically by means of robust, thick petiolate lanceolate-shaped leaves with intramarginal secondary veins; operculate flower buds consisting of imbricate petals with discernable margins; solitary inflorescence with three flowers per umbellaster, epigynous and bisexual flowers. Based upon combined characteristics of leaf, flower, and bud morphology, these fossils conform to the Eucalypt clade and are recognized as a new fossil genus and species: Hindeucalyptus eocenicus Patel, R.F. Almeida, Ali et Khan gen. nov. et sp. nov. We also compare it with extant and extinct eucalypts using morphological phylogeny and character mapping analyses. In addition, we briefly discuss its phytogeographic and paleoclimatic implications regarding the distribution and habitat of fossil and modern eucalypts.

Based on several earwigfly specimens with well-preserved mouthparts of Meropeidae from mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber, a detailed, initial analysis was conducted of the structure of Mesozoic meropeids. Compared to the singularly flattened mandible of modern meropeids, the new specimens reveal that Mesozoic representatives had two distinct types of mandibles: blade-shaped and scoop-shaped. Current fossil evidence indicates that during the Mesozoic Era, Meropeidae displayed sexual dimorphism that was reflected in the structure of their mandibles. This structural difference may indicate that about 99 million years ago, meropeids had a more complex diet than extant confamilial taxa. Phylogenetic results suggest that Torvimerope gen. nov., along with Burmomerope, two extinct genera, form a clade and that are the sister taxon to crown-group Meropeidae. The new material offers new possibilities for inferring the feeding habits and mating behavior of early Meropeidae.

During the Cretaceous period, the lacewing superfamily Mantispoidea, with an assemblage of species possessing raptorial forelegs, have undergone a rapid species radiation, characterized by abundant species richness and high morphological plasticity. Nevertheless, the morphology and early evolution of the specialized predatory organ around the time of its origin in raptorial Mantispoidea have been poorly documented due to the rarity of fossil evidence, especially for the pre-Cretaceous fossils. Herein, a new genus and new species, that is Archarhachiberotha longitarsa Wang, Ren et Wang gen. et sp. nov., was described from the Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation of northeastern China. This new genus was characterized by the remarkable raptorial forelegs, that is, typically elongated coxa, relatively less-swollen femur and rudimentary small femoral spines, and well-developed tarsi. Considering the peculiar morphological combination and antiquity of the new genus, it was assigned to be a stem-group lineage of Mantispoidea. Also, the detailed analyses of morphology and biological functions of raptorial forelegs were made to conclude that the new genus evolved into an unknown but primitive raptorial type that was distinctly different from the extant morphological features and raptorial mechanisms. In addition, the evolutionary tendency of raptorial Mantispoidea herein summarized highlights morphological diversity and disparity between fossil and extant representatives, and provides a rare case to explore the entire evolutionary history of a specialized structure in one lineage.

For clades originating in warm climates, the tropical niche conservatism hypothesis predicts that current biological assemblages in colder or drier climates are expected to have lower phylogenetic diversity, and species in colder or drier climates are expected to be more closely related to each other (i.e., higher phylogenetic clustering). Liverworts are one of the oldest clades of extant land plants. They originated about 500 Ma during a warm (“greenhouse”) period and experienced multiple major cycles of warm and cold periods. Here, I test the tropical niche conservatism hypothesis using liverwort assemblages distributed along an elevational gradient crossing about 5000 m of elevation in the central Himalaya. I found that, in general, phylogenetic diversity and dispersion decrease with increasing elevation and thus with decreasing temperature, which is consistent with the tropical niche conservatism hypothesis. Phylogenetic diversity decreases with elevation monotonically, but phylogenetic dispersion decreases with elevation in a triphasic (zig-zag) pattern, which is generally consistent with the triphasic pattern found in angiosperms and polypod ferns along the same elevational gradient. Temperature-related variables explained approximately the same amount of the variation in phylogenetic diversity and dispersion as did precipitation-related variables, although mean annual temperature explained 9%−15% more variation than did annual precipitation. Climate extreme variables explained approximately the same amount of variation in phylogenetic diversity and dispersion as did climate seasonality variables.

Panax (Araliaceae) is a small genus containing several well known medicinally important species. It has a disjunct distribution between Eastern Asia and Eastern North America, with most species from eastern Asia, especially the Himalayan-Hengduan Mountains (HHM). This study used the genomic target enrichment method to obtain 358 nuclear ortholog loci and complete plastome sequences from 59 accessions representing all 18 species of the genus. Divergence time estimation and biogeographic analyses suggest that Panax was probably widely distributed from North America to Asia during the middle Eocene. During the late Eocene to Oligocene Panax may have experienced extensive extinctions during global climate cooling. It survived and diverged early in the mountains of Southwest China and tropical Indochina, where some taxa migrated northwestward to the HHM, eastward to central and eastern China, and then onward toward Japan and North America. Gene flow is identified as the main contributor to phylogenetic discordance (33.46%) within Panax. We hypothesize that the common ancestors of the medicinally important P. ginseng + P. japonicus + P. quinquefolius clade had experienced allopolyploidization, which increased adaptability to cooler and drier environments. During the middle to late Miocene, several dispersals occurred from the region of the HHM to contiguous areas, suggesting that HHM acted as a refugium and also served as a secondary diversification center for Panax. Our findings highlight that the interplay of orographic uplift and climatic changes in the HHM greatly contributed to the species diversity of Panax.

Understanding the Cenozoic vegetation history of what is now the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau is crucial for elucidating the co-evolutionary dynamics between plateau development, its environment, and the organisms it hosts. In this study, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of phytoliths within the late Oligocene–Early Miocene lacustrine sedimentary section of the Lunpola Basin, central Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. The diverse phytolith morphotype assemblages indicate that the vegetation of the central Tibetan region mainly comprised a mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest. Grasses in the understory primarily consisted of Pooideae, distinguished by phytolith morphotypes such as rondel, crenate and Stipa-type bilobate forms. Combined with previous work, we infer that riparian vegetation of the central Tibetan region transitioned from a humid subtropical forest, dominated by broad-leaved woody plants during the middle Eocene, to a more seasonally arid open woodland containing abundant woody and herbaceous plants during the late Eocene, before developing into a cooler mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest during the late Oligocene–Early Miocene. The growth of the central Tibetan region and retreat of the Tethys Ocean, together with the uplift of the Himalaya, contributed to this vegetation change. This study provides new evidence from the phytolith perspective for the evolutionary history of Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau vegetation being tied to plateau formation and regional climate change.

The Himalayas represent a complex mountain system housing some of the world's richest floras along with a high level of endemism. Among them, Lysionotus (Gesneriaceae) stands out as a small genus (~34 species) that is unexpectedly distributed across southern to eastern Asia. Within this genus, the mountain forests of the south Pan-Himalaya region emerge as a hotspot of diversity, hosting most epiphytic and endemic Lysionotus species. To explore the origin, evolutionary history and development of the current distribution pattern of Lysionotus, we inferred a highly resolved phylogenetic framework using 649 nuclear genes sourced from transcriptomes for 27 species. We revealed three major clades within Lysionotus with strong support, corresponding to the genus's classification into three sections (sects. Didymocarpoides, Lysionotus, and Cyathocalyx) based on morphological characters. Molecular dating suggests that Lysionotus is likely to have originated in the karst regions of northern Vietnam to southwestern China during the middle Oligocene (28.18 Ma), and then migrated westward to the southern Himalaya regions during the Miocene. The speciation rates of Lysionotus were likely to be positively linked to changes in East Asian monsoons and past temperatures. Notably, epiphytic species of sect. Lysionotus began colonizing the tropical and subtropical forests of the Pan-Himalaya around the mid-Miocene Climatic Optimum, coinciding with the transition to long seed appendages. Our findings support that the formation and development of forests in the southern Himalaya, along with paleo-climate changes and morphological innovations, which probably facilitated the evolution and expansion of the spatial distribution of Lysionotus.

The uplift of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau shaped the landforms and influenced Asia's climate system and ecosystem. Vegetations on the Plateau are the first to be affected by the uplift history of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and related ecological impacts. However, original research on vegetation in the central Qinghai-Tibet Plateau remains limited. Here, we reconstructed the vegetation in the Lunpola Basin, central Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from 24.3 to 16 Ma based on pollen data from the Dingqinghu Formation. Pollen assemblages reveal a temperate mixed deciduous broad-leaved and coniferous forest around the Lunpola paleolake during the latest Oligocene to the Early Miocene. An obvious vegetation vertical zone existed near the Lunpola Basin. Dark coniferous forests grew in the highlands, thermophilous shrubs stayed in the lowlands. This work provides new and original data on plant composition and vegetation in the central Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and enhances our understanding of the ecological impacts of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau uplift.

The formation of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau has long been debated, despite the various proxies used to estimate its paleoelevation. Here, we introduce a novel method to calibrate paleoelevation by comparing the fossil and extant plant communities in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. Our estimation confirms that the uplift of the plateau was an episodic and heterochronous process. Specifically, the Lhasa Terrane was already elevated by 1 km before the initial India–Asia collision. During the first orogenic stage, the Qiangtang Terrane rose faster than the Lhasa Terrane, attaining 3 km in the late Eocene. In the second stage, the Lhasa Terrane underwent rapid uplift, reaching 3 km in the Oligocene. By the Middle Miocene, both the Qiangtang and Lhasa terranes had achieved an elevation of 4 km. The Himalaya rose by at least 2 km after the Pliocene. Our biological knowledge-based findings contradict the previous geological evidence-based reports, which posited that the plateau had reached an elevation of 4–5 km during the Eocene. We provide a new perspective on the plateau′s uplift history based on biological evidence, which has the potential to reconcile the confusion arising from contradictory proxies.

Pterocarya (Juglandaceae) is disjunctly distributed in East Asia and the Caucasus region today, but its fossils are widely distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. We first inferred phylogeny with time estimation of Pterocarya under node-dating (ND) based on plastomes of all eight extant species and tip-dating (TD) based on plastomes and 69 morphological characters of 19 extant and extinct species, respectively. We compared the biogeographical reconstructions on the timetrees from ND and TD, respectively, and then compiled 83 fossil records and 599 current occurrences for predicting the potential distributions for the past and the future. The most recent comment ancestor of Pterocarya is inferred in East Asia at 40.46 Ma (95% highest posterior density [HPD]: 28.04–54.86) under TD and 26.81 Ma (95% HPD: 23.03–33.12) under ND. The current distribution was attributed to one dispersal and one vicariant event without fossils, but as many as six dispersal, six vicariant, and 11 local extinction events when considering fossils. Pterocarya migrated between East Asia and North America via the Bering Land Bridge during the early Oligocene and the early Miocene periods. With the closure of Turgai Strait, Pterocarya dispersed between East Asia and Europe through the Miocene. The potential distribution analyses indicated that Pterocarya preferred warm temperate regions across the Northern Hemisphere since the Oligocene, but the drastic temperature decline caused its extinction in high latitudes. Except for Pterocarya fraxinifolia and Pterocarya stenoptera, suitable habitats for this genus are predicted to contract by 2070 due to climate change.

In this study, we explored the distributions of grass genera in the Southern Cone (SC) of South America, applying several phylogenetic diversity (PD) metrics and randomization tests. Grasses appear to have been present in South America since their early evolution as tropical understory species more than 60 Ma. During the course of evolution, grasses have adapted to all terrestrial biomes and become one of the most successful plant families on earth. At present, the SC contains nearly all terrestrial biomes and a wide range of humid to arid ecoregions. Analyzing 126.514 point occurrences and four plastid markers for 148 genera (91% of the native grass genera), we found that tropical humid regions hold the highest PD, with no observed bias in branch lengths. These results indicate that niche conservatism dominates the diversity pattern of grasses in the SC. We found significantly low PD in the Dry Chaco and in the Patagonian Steppe, which suggest ecological filtering in both warm and cold arid regions. The Patagonian Steppe also holds significantly longer branches than expected by chance, as the native grass flora is mainly composed of distantly related Pooideae genera with a northern hemisphere origin. Short branches are found in the Uruguayan Savanna, suggesting that these grasslands could be a cradle for grass diversity within the SC. The dated phylogeny supported the current view of a relatively recent evolution of the family within the SC, with most diversification taking place from the middle Miocene and onwards.

Neuroptera, as a small relic group of Insecta undergoing a rapid species diversification during the Mesozoic Era, is known by diverse extinct endemic lineages preserved as impression fossils and in amber. The current understanding of Mesozoic neuropterans' diversity has mainly focused on the adults, because the contemporaneous larvae have been fairly rare especially for the Jurassic lacewings. Herein, a new giant lacewing larva, Natator giganteus gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Middle Jurassic Daohugou Beds of China. The remarkable larva is characterized by its impressively large body size, distinctively elongated cervix, and presence of swimming hairs on legs, which provide direct evidence to reveal an aquatic habit for the Jurassic lacewing larva. The morphological analysis indicates this giant larva would have probably inhabited the benthic environments of Jurassic montane rivers and streams. In addition, its morphological specialization suggests that it might have adopted an ambush predation strategy to catch its prey. The finding enhances our knowledge of the species diversity and morphological plasticity for the Jurassic lacewing larvae, and reveals that the aquatic lineages of Neuroptera exhibited dramatically structural and ecological convergence across the evolutionary process.

The small subfamily Linnaeoideae of Caprifoliaceae exhibits a disjunct distribution in Eurasia and North America, including Mexico, with most taxa occurring in eastern Asia or Mexico and the monospecific Linnaea Gronov. ex L. having a circumboreal to north temperate distribution. We sampled 17 of the 20 species representing all Linnaeoideae genera and used nuclear (target enrichment) and complete plastome sequence data to reconstruct the phylogeny. Our results show strong topological conflicts between nuclear and plastid data, especially concerning Dipelta Maxim. and Diabelia Landrein, supporting hybridization events complicating the deep diversification. Nuclear data were used for divergence time estimation and ancestral area reconstruction. The divergence time between the Mexican Vesalea M. Martens & Galeotti and the Linnaea clade was dated to 39.5 Ma, with a 95% highest posterior density of 28.2 Ma (mid-Oligocene) to 45.2 Ma (mid-Eocene). Reconstructed ancestral areas support a widespread common ancestor of Linnaea plus Vesalea in Mexico and at least another area (eastern Asia, North America, or Europe). The biogeographic analysis, including fossils, supports the ancestral range of Linnaeoideae to be widespread in central and western China + Europe + Mexico, or eastern and northern Asia + central and western China + Mexico, or central and western China + North America + Mexico. The North Atlantic and/or the Bering land bridges may be important in the widespread distribution across continents in the Northern Hemisphere. Our study highlights the importance of utilizing fossils in biogeographic inferences andusing data from different genomes while reconstructing deep and shallow phylogenies of organisms.

East Asia constitutes one of the largest and most complex areas of plant diversity globally. This complexity is attributable to the geological history and climatic diversity of East Asia. However, controversy persists over the biogeographical hypotheses and different studies on this topic. The demographical complexity of temperate deciduous woody plants and heterogeneity of geological and climatic fluctuations in East Asia remain poorly understood. We aimed to assemble the chloroplast and nuclear genomes of 360 individuals from five walnut (Juglans) species in East Asia and comprehensively analyze the phylogenetic inference, genetic structure, population demographic, and selection pressure. The results showed that East Asian walnuts could be divided into two major groups, that is, section Juglans/Dioscaryon and sect. Cardiocaryon. Within sect. Cardiocaryon, the samples were categorized into the northern clade and southern clade, both of which were affected by Quaternary glaciation; however, the southern clade was affected to a lesser extent. The population expansion events observed in sect. Cardiocaryon and sect. Dioscaryon since the late Miocene indicated that Neogene climate cooling substantially affected the distribution of Tertiary relict plants in East Asia. Biogeographic analysis results showed that the uplift of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau (QTP) might have contributed to the divergence within sect. Dioscaryon. Our findings highlight the heterogeneity of climatic fluctuations in the northern and southern regions of East Asia during the late Neogene and Quaternary periods and suggest that the uplift of QTP could have facilitated the divergence of temperate deciduous woody plants.

Fossil leaves, fruits, and woods assigned to Rhamnaceae have been recorded from India, however, there are no previous reports of rhamnaceous fossil flowers from India. Here, we report the first fossil flowers in appreciable numbers from the early Eocene (Palana Formation) sedimentary sequences of Gurha Lignite Mine, Rajasthan, western India, and show that they are attributable to Rhamnaceae. We examined variation in flower morphology among extant and extinct rhamnaceous species as a basis for interpreting our fossil flowers. The specimens are small star-like, pentamerous, actinomorphic, gamosepalous flowers with triangular, keeled sepals with acute apices, spathulate, short-clawed petals alternating with sepals, shallow, five-lobed nectary disc with prominent pentagonal outer margin, and a centrally placed globose ovary with stigma scar. The flowers co-occur with ziziphoid leaves and are recognized as a new species Eopaliura indica Patel, Rana & Khan sp. nov. Because of aforesaid characteristics, fossil flowers are easily identifiable as Rhamnaceae and should provide a reliable means of documenting the evolutionary history of this family during the Cenozoic.

Menispermaceae are an angiosperm family of mostly climbing plants distributed throughout tropical regions. The fruits in this family have a strong sclerified endocarp and can be used for reliable species-level identifications, even in a fossilized form. New Paleocene-age menispermaceous endocarps have recently been discovered in South America and Asia, while in Europe, they are mostly found in the Eocene. This paper focuses on the study of fossil endocarps belonging to Menispermaceae, found in the Petit-Pâtis locality, which is one of the few Paleocene localities in Europe. The locality is dated to the late Paleocene (57–56 Ma) and the fossils represent flora and fauna in the Paris Basin before the onset of the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum. Lignitized fossils were photographed and their morphology was analyzed using computed tomography, scanning electron microscope, and geometric morphometric analysis. The analysis of 36 fossils belonging to Menispermaceae revealed that three genera (Stephania, Palaeosinomenium, Tinospora) were present in the late Paleocene of Paris Basin. Differences in internal morphology and a more inflated endocarp base led to a description of a new fossil species—Palaeosinomenium oisensis sp. nov. The occurrence of these genera in the Paleocene of France is consistent with the suggestion that megathermal flora was present in the Paris Basin before the Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum. These three genera are currently the oldest occurrences in Europe, highlighting the connection between paleofloras of the Americas, Europe, and Asia in the Paleocene.

Pseudo-nitzschia is a group of widely distributed planktonic diatoms. Some species produce the neurotoxin domoic acid. Herein, two new Pseudo-nitzschia species were described from Chinese coastal waters and the South China Sea after combining morphological and molecular data, together with biogeographical traits. Pseudo-nitzschia punctionis sp. nov. was similar to Pseudo-nitzschia bipertita morphologically, but differed in poroid structure, which was undivided in P. punctionis but divided in two sectors in P. bipertita. This difference corresponded to the presence of two hemicompensatory base changes (HCBCs) in the secondary structure of internal transcribed spacer 2. Pseudo-nitzschia polymorpha sp. nov. was sister to Pseudo-nitzschia limii phylogenetically, but distinct by the various shapes of perforations on the valve and copula, which was supported by four HCBCs. In a metabarcoding analysis, multiple new ribotypes were identified within the two new species, and intraspecific genetic divergences were analyzed. Metabarcoding data revealed that P. punctionis had a broader temperature range (12.9–30.5°C) than P. polymorpha (22.3–30.5°C). Within the two new species, different traits were found among the amplicon sequence variants regarding temperature and biogeography, representing different microevolutionary directions under environmental selection. The two new species had different biogeographical traits when compared to their closely related species. Domoic acid was detected in strains of P. punctionis at a concentration of 13.5–17.7 fg/cell, but the toxin was not found in strains of P. polymorpha. A combination of characters based on laboratory strains and field metabarcoding data provided more data for delimiting Pseudo-nitzschia species and gave new insights into their diversity and biogeography.

Parrotia C. A. Meyer (Hamamelidaceae) is a relictual genus with only two extant species disjunctly distributed in the subtropical forests of East China and temperate forests of North Iran. Fossil records suggest that Parrotia was widespread in Europe and Asia during the Miocene, but its fossils are predominantly based on pollen and leaves. In this paper we describe the first fossil flower of Parrotia based on an exceptionally well-preserved amber inclusion from the middle Miocene of Zhangpu, Southeast China. The fossil flower was investigated with light microscope and microcomputed tomography techniques. Parrotia zhiyanii sp. nov. is a small apetalous staminate flower subtended by a pair of prominent bracts. The androecium consists of 12 stamens, and each stamen consists of a short, slender filament and a prominent, elongated anther. The anthers with short simple trichomes on the outer surface and a prominent apical connective extension are opened by longitudinal slits. Unlike its living relatives, the new Parrotia from Zhangpu grew in a Miocene seasonal tropical rainforest.
